๐ The Legend
The legend of Jageshwar is as old as the mountains themselves, often identified in the Puranas as the site where the "Nagesh" (Lord of the Snakes) Jyotirlinga resides. It is said that in the distant Satya Yuga, this was the forest where Lord Shiva came to perform deep penance. The Gopis of the forest were so entranced by his divine form that their husbands, the Saptarishis, grew concerned. To resolve the turmoil, Shiva transformed himself into a stone Lingamโthe very first Lingam to be worshipped on Earth.
Historically, this sanctuary became the crown jewel of the Kumaon region under the Chand and Katyuri dynasties, who built and restored these stone marvels between the 7th and 12th centuries. For over a thousand years, it served as a vital stop for pilgrims on the ancient route to Mount Kailash, a gateway between the mortal world and the divine peaks of the North.
